EFL Cup Final: Newcastle beat Liverpool as the Toons end trophy drought
Newcastle have ended year-long wait for major trophies as they defeated Liverpool in the final of the Carabao Cup.
Burn and Isak goals were enough to seal a victory for the Toons which has cast more doubt on Liverpool’s push for major trophies this season as they suffered second loss in the pace of four days.
In the voice of Sky Sports’ pundit, Jamie Carragher at the Wembley:
“It’s not ideal that the England squad does not have an English manager. When the job became available, I said Eddie Howe was the best option.
“If the FA appointed him, he probably wouldn’t be doing this today!
“He’s done a brilliant job. I think he is the real deal.”

Carra: Liverpool Found It Hard To Cope
“Under Eddie Howe, Newcastle have been a physical team but they saved the best until now.
“It wasn’t a great football game but a lot of that was probably a ploy from Newcastle. There is a lack of pace with the Liverpool front three.
“It’s not their day, it’s all about Newcastle. Set piece wise, duels in the middle of the park and pace. Liverpool couldn’t cope.”

“Not bad. I’ve had worse weeks! I don’t want to go to sleep because I feel like I am dreaming.
“I knew Alexis [Mac Allister] wasn’t looking so I could get a jump on him. As soon as I headed it, I knew it was in. I don’t get many so at least I saved it for a big occasion.
“I feel strange the minute. It is hard to put into words.”

Newcastle Manager Eddie Howe speaking during the post-match conference, “Both teams were very direct. We dealt with that very well. No-one wanted to make a mistake.
“There wasn’t a lot of pretty football but we were effective.”
Howe remains positive after the match, claiming it could be a turning point the club needed.
“We wanted to do the football club proud today. We are trying to break new ground and hopefully this is a turning point for us.
“With set plays, we have worked consistently on certain ones for two weeks for this game.
“Dan [Burn] will be the first to admit, he hasn’t practiced like that! All of the players were magnificent but particularly him. He was a collasus.”
The Newcastle boss also argued that today is an emotional day but admitted he was confident
“Emotional, very emotional. It is very unlike me. We knew what was at stake and just wanted to do everyone proud.
“We were desperate to try and win the trophy after so many years of hurt.
“It had a different feel. We have won the game and everything will be reviewed positively but we prepared well and I was very confident the players would perform.”
Reaction to Chiesa’s late goal, he said: “That was tough. Loads of different things going through my head.
“We always make it difficult for ourselves! It was never going to be a 2-0.
“When the goal went in, I thought it was handball. I couldn’t understand how it was given.”
Also speaking following the Toon’s EPL Cup victory, Jamie Redknapp stated that Eddie Howe Had done enough to win a silverware.
“Eddie Howe deserves it. He’s so forward thinking. At times they’ve have hands tied behind their backs [due to finances].
“He’s improved players. What he’s done with Joelinton. He’s turned into a midfield powerhouse. That’s credit to the manager. Fully deserved win.”
Victory over Liverpool in the EFL Cup Final has guaranteed Newcastle a place in the play-off stage of the UEFA Europa Conference League next season.
If they manage to finish fifth on the English Premier League table at the end of the season, or among the top six and another club finish as fifth, their Conference League playoff will round will move to next-highest placed team that did not qualify in the Premier League which can most likely be the team ending eighth.

“I remember watching both semi-finals against Arsenal and Newcastle battered them. They were aggressive and what I like about this Newcastle team is they’re a bit of a throwback.

“I am gutted Liverpool didn’t win but if there was any team you’d want to win, it is probably Newcastle.
“I love Eddie Howe to bits. He was always criticised for the way he played at Bournemouth but he has improved massively since joining Newcastle.
“They battered Liverpool.”
According to Dan Long at the Wembley, “The Newcastle end has been singing loud and proud for HOURS now. They’ve got a long journey home tonight, but they will not mind one little bit.”

It is always a historical moment for every club to lift a trophy, especially after a year-long drought and talking about Newcastle, this means so much to the club fans who have not experienced the club lifting major domestic trophy for seventy years.

“Liverpool got a consolation goal. I find it difficult to be too critical, considering what it looked like they were going to achieve this season but not many expected them to.
“Liverpool were poor vs PSG and Newcastle are a good Premier League team but they have wiped the floor with them. Liverpool’s legs have run out of steam but luckily for them they have a big enough lead in the league.”
