Facebook Cancels F8 Conference Over Fear of Coronavirus. News coming out of Silicon Valley indicates that the annual Facebook F8 Conference scheduled for this month has been scrapped over concerns about the coronavirus outbreak. The Tech Giant released a statement on Thursday.
Facebook becomes the second major Technology giant within the past one month to cancel a major event due to concerns over health scares. This further attests to the continuing disruption of the global business operation by this novel coronavirus, COVID-19.
Earlier this month, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona was nixed after high-profile companies, including Sony, Amazon, LG, Ericsson and Nvidia, backed out.
The Annual Facebook F8 Conference is the annual gathering of Developers that works and partners with the Major Tech Giant.
F8 is attended by thousands of people each year in San Jose, California, and executives typically make a host of new product announcements and updates. The conference was originally set to take place on May 5 and May 6.
The Director of Developer Platforms and Programs, Konstantinos Papamiltiadis said in a statement that the company will cancel the “in-person component of F8” and replace it with “local events, video and live-streamed content.”
He further said that “Celebrating our global developer community at F8 each year is incredibly important to us at Facebook, but we won’t sacrifice the health and safety of our community to do so,” Papamiltiadis said.
