Prince Harry has been appointed as the Chief Impact Officer at California-based Coaching and Mental Health Business, Better-Up.
Prince Harry said in a statement that he was “really excited” about taking on the new role. His exact duties, hours, and any payment are not clear.
This is the latest development after the highly controversial interview granted by Duke Harry and Duchess Megan to Oprah Winfrey earlier this month.
The Duke of Sussex has been appointed chief impact officer at BetterUp, where he will have input into product strategy decisions and charitable contributions and speak publicly about topics related to mental health.
In his statement, Prince Harry said his goal in his new function would be to “lift critical dialogues around mental health, build supportive and compassionate communities, and foster an environment for honest and vulnerable conversations”.
He said he would be focusing on driving advocacy and awareness for mental fitness, guiding the firm’s social mission, and expanding its global community.
The Duke added: “Self-optimisation is not about fixing something that’s broken.
“It’s about becoming the best version of ourselves, with whatever life throws at us – someone who is ready for the next challenge and can meet setbacks with courage, confidence, and self-awareness.
“This is what BetterUp is making possible and I look forward to being on this journey with you.”
The organization’s website described Harry as a humanitarian, military veteran, mental wellness advocate, and environmentalist.
While Prince Harry will not manage employees or have people report directly to him, he is likely to spend some time in the company’s San Francisco headquarters once it is safe to do so, says the BetterUp CEO, Alexi Robichaux.
In his role as the company’s first chief impact officer, Prince Harry is expected to have input into initiatives including product strategy decisions and charitable contributions, and advocate publicly on topics related to mental health.
Prince Harry said that when he met Mr. Robichaux, they “instantly recognized a shared passion for helping others realize their full potential”.
The chief impact officer position is relatively rare in the corporate world and it is seen more commonly in non-profit organizations such as Amnesty International.

Royal Clapbacks
Harry and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, announced they were stepping back from royal duties in January 2020 to move across the Atlantic.
Last month, Buckingham Palace announced they had left the Royal Family for good, confirming they will not return as working members of the family and that they would lose their patronages.
Earlier this month, they were interviewed by Oprah Winfrey and made several startling claims about the path their lives had taken since their wedding in May 2018.
The couple accused an unnamed member of the Royal Family, definitely not the Queen or the Duke of Edinburgh, of raising concerns about how dark their son Archie’s skin tone would be before he was born.
The duke also said that none of his relatives spoke in support of Meghan following the racism he said she faced in the media, with the duchess saying she suffered suicidal thoughts in response to the attacks.
The Royal Family was finally forced to release a statement responding to the claims, saying the race issues brought up in the interview were “concerning” and would be “addressed by the family privately”, but added that “some recollections may vary”.
