Prince Lafeet Fagbemi, SAN, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, has echoed President Bola Tinubu’s resilience toward restoring the nation to her elite status.

Justice Fagbemi has stated various reforms and policies embarked on by the president in all area of the federating unit which depicts the sincerity of his government to ameliorate the living condition of the citizenry.

Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Kamar Ogundele, at the Abuja Social Media Summit on Wednesday, the AGF made a rally call on all Nigerians to support the federal government and its policies.

Noting that no government will succeed without the backing and support of the masses. He then proposed “collective effort” from every quarter and all sleeves must be rolled to ensure we achieve Nigeria we all hope for.

Addressing the media on the summit which is tagged ‘Harnessing the Power of Social Media for National Development,’ disclosing that social media has become an offshoot of modernised communication which has the capability to build or destroy a country.

Worldwide, with Nigeria not an exception, social media has brought about guaranteeing freedom of speech and expression because the government has approved it.

He said, “They have also become veritable tools that our teeming youths are using to showcase their talents and also to make money.

“But we must realise the need for us to at all times demonstrate responsible citizenship while this government has continued to provide responsible leadership through many social safety nets it has provided over time.

“Just as they say that social media neither sleeps nor slumbers, we must watch our word! Weigh it before you utter it. For, once uttered, it cannot be retrieved. No individual should use his freedom of speech on social media to infringe upon the rights of another as it is fast becoming the order of the day. “We must also be careful of what we say about our country. Political differences should not make us de-market our country on the international stage. Only unpatriotic citizens or leaders will choose to do so.

“Those who speak ill of their country to settle political differences should never have the opportunity to lead the same country at any stage.

“This government has demonstrated responsible leadership by allowing freedom of expression and will continue to do so. Harnessing the power of social media for national development involves leveraging social media platforms to promote economic growth, improve governance, enhance civic engagement, and foster societal progress.

“Some ways social media can contribute to national development include e-commerce and digital payments; job creation and remote work opportunities; entrepreneurship and innovation promotion; tourism marketing and promotion; and access to international markets.

“It also promotes transparency and accountability; citizen participation and engagement; public service announcements and information dissemination; feedback mechanisms and complaint resolution.

“Governments all over the world are also using it for education and awareness campaigns, social inclusion and diversity promotion, as well as national unity and patriotism promotion to achieve societal progress.”

He pointed to good examples of India’s Digital India programme, South Korea’s e-Government initiative, Estonia’s digital governance model, Kenya’s M-Pesa mobile payment system, and Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative. That Nigeria should look to emulate such initiatives.

“Nigeria is not left behind. Here the vibrant National Orientation Agency (NOA), which is an agency of the federal government, is dedicated to fostering national unity and development by enlightening and engaging citizens with accurate and timely information.

He furthered by stating all pros and cons of social media; citing the damages it has rendered the world entirely by creating and fuelling cyber-security threat, digital divide and inequality, misinformation and disinformation of any kind and private concerns.

Alhaji Umar Farouk Bahago, the Emir of Minna, said that the present hardship and economic woes are proceeds of Buhari’s administration.

He asserted this during an enlightenment event on Federal Government Intervention Programmes set up by the office of the Minister of Information and National Orientation, held in Minna, Niger State.

He stated that so many Nigerians are not well educated on the initiatives and policies introduced by Tinubu’s administration because they are not adequately informed by the government’s spokespersons, especially in dialects they understand.

On the other hand, General Abudulsalam Abubakar, the former Head of States, has expressed his fear and worry over the unbearable hardship experienced by Nigerians, imploring President Bola Tinubu to be proactive and embark on relief drive to ameliorate the suffering of the masses.

The Emir said, “A significant amount of funds was misappropriated by previous administrations, and the current government is working to recover them.

“Since the removal of fuel subsidies, various measures have been implemented to alleviate the impact on citizens. It is crucial for the government to communicate its policies and programmes effectively, using local languages.”

Muhammed Idris, the Minister of information and National Orientation, who was stood in by the Zonal Coordinator of the Federal Information Resource Centre in Minna, Asabe Sule, disclosed the aim of the event.

The event which is stated to boost awareness of the federal government’s drive to make life more bearable by delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.

He stated President Tinubu’s commitment to accountability and transparency and made a call on the citizens to support the government and its initiatives.

Meanwhile, General Abdulsalam, the former Military Head of States, nailed the distribution of rice, stating that that’s not the kind of palliative needed, by Nigerians, so solve the rising cost of living.

He stressed the disconnection between the leaders and the citizens which has not enabled them to understand the struggle and difficulty faced by the ordinary citizens.

This remark was made at his Hilltop Residence during a courtesy visit of the members of the Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights, a civil society organisation situated in Minna, Niger State.

During the visit, he was urged by the organisation to lead a rally call on President Bola Tinubu to look into current economic woe facing the country.

“The hardship in the country is spiraling out of control,” Abdulsalami said.

“Every citizen is crying, and the situation worsens daily. Many can no longer afford three square meals due to high transportation costs, increased fuel prices, rising school fees and a lack of financial resources.”

He pledged his commitment, as a former Head of States, to appeal to governments at all levels – Federal, State and Local – to intensify their efforts towards easing current hardship.

Abdulsalam also disclosed that the executives of the forum he attended have vowed to proffer solutions for Federal Government to issues militating against the country, citing that the distribution of palliative is not enough to tackle the menace.

“Instead, the government should buy food and sell it at reduced prices to help citizens afford essential items,” he suggested.

Regarding the fast-approaching “Planned #EndBadGovernance Protest” scheduled to hold on 1st October, 2024, the former Head of States implored Nigerians to be more patient and remain peaceful, noting that the government is never trying turn a blind eye and deaf ear to their plight.

Abdullahi Jabi, the leader of the civil society organisation, sought the former Military Head of States’ influence in converging more Nigerian for active involvement in the governance of the country.
